Manthra Pushpanjali – Prayer Songs and Flowers as Offering to the Lord

Dr. Krishnamoorthy (Subbu) Subramanian,
Honorary Editor, vEda vaaNee e-Journal subbukdg@gmail.com

Mantra Pushpanjali is a very well-known Vedic Mantra, chanted at the conclusion of every prayer service in Hindu worship traditions. Chanting this mantra (prayer song) as part of the prayer service in chorus by all gathered and the rhythmic nature of the verse of this poem in Sanskrit is an exhilarating experience for all those present. You can listen to this brief chanting here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nf9bJzOGZTA

Deep inside this prayer song would appear to be a solemn veneration of the Veda (all Vedic Scriptures). Following is a translation of this prayer song as an expression of respect and awe of Vedas, the enduring scriptures of Vedic Philosophy. This translation is published in the veDa vaaNee e-Journal https://vedasamskrutisamiti.org.in/veda-vaanee-ejournal/   Page  61-62  Veda Samskruti Samiti  vEda vaaNee – ISSN 2583-9020  Volume 3, Issue 1, April 2025

This vedic poem is found in the Taittiriya Aranyakam of the Yajur Veda. The poem in its Sanskrit version and its transliteration in English are provided at the end, for those interested!

These Vedas are the flowers representing natural flowers,
people and everything one can perceive of.
These natural flowers, as beautiful as the moon, are offered as the representations of all the flowers, people and everything

one can perceive of.
May all these Vedas, all these all-pervading scriptures called Vedas exist through the generations and for long periods of time.

May the creations of Agni (the Lord of fire) exist and endure eternally. Like the eternal Lord of Fire, may these Vedas exist and endure eternally.
May the holy water and fire of worship (Deepam)

exist and endure eternally.
May all these Vedas, all these all-pervading scriptures called Vedas exist through the generations and for long periods of time.

May the creations of Vayu (the Lord of wind) exist and endure eternally.
Like the eternal Lord of Wind, may these Vedas exist and endure eternally.
May the holy water and the breeze of worship (from the fan)
exist and endure eternally.
May all these Vedas, all these all-pervading scriptures called Vedas exist through the generations and for long periods of time.

May the creations of Sun (the Lord of light) exist and endure eternally.
Like the eternal Lord of Light, may these Vedas exist and endure eternally.
May the holy water and the illumination from the sun
exist and endure eternally.
May all these Vedas, all these all-pervading scriptures called Vedas exist through the generations and for long periods of time.

May the creations of the Moon (the Lord of beauty)
exist and endure eternally.
Like the eternal Lord of tranquil beauty, may these Vedas
exist and endure eternally.
May the holy water and the tranquil beauty from the moon
exist and endure eternally.
May all these Vedas, all these all-pervading scriptures called Vedas exist through the generations and for long periods of time.

May the creations of the stars (the Lords of directions or orientation
Exist and endure eternally.
Like the eternal Lords of directions or orientation May these Vedas
exist and endure eternally.
May the holy water and the sense of direction from the stars
exist and endure eternally.
May all these Vedas, all these all-pervading scriptures called Vedas exist through the generations and for long periods of time.

May the creations of all those born in the Universe (the Lord of Creative Energy) exist and endure eternally.
Like the eternal Lord of creation may these Vedas

exist and endure eternally.
May the holy water and the creative energy of the universe
exist and endure eternally.
May all these Vedas, all these all-pervading scriptures called Vedas exist through the generations and for long periods of time.

May the creations of the Years (the Lords of time or duration) Exist and endure eternally. Like the eternal Lord of time and duration
may these Vedas exist and endure eternally.
May the holy water and the sense of time or duration from the Years
Exist and endure eternally.
May all these Vedas, all these all-pervading scriptures called Vedas exist through the generations and for long periods of time.

May all these Vedas, well established in their roots from the blessings of all these Lords, endure as the guiding principles of all our lives.
